Two-Day International Conference
'Labour in the Age of Globalization'
held at University of Karachi and PILER Centre
on May 2 & 3, 2012


A two-day International Labour conference “Labour in the Age of Globalization” was inaugurated at the University of Karachi. Key speakers at the conference included: Professor Jan Breman, University of Amsterdam, Dr. Amrita Chhachhi (Institute of Social Studies, The Hague), Dr. Kaiser Bengali (Senior Economist), Dr. Mohammad Qaisar (Vice chancellor, University of Karachi), Arif Hasan (Senior Urban Planner), Dr. Rubina Saigol (Researcher), Dr. Asad Sayeed (Senior Researcher), Lateef Mughal, Farid Awan (Trade Unionists) and others. The first day’s sessions were built around the themes of the future of trade unions in the 21st century.


The second day of the International Labour Conference was organized at the PILER Centre. The conference had various sessions on labour, climate and natural disasters, and also included South Asian Labour aspect. Key speakers included Dr. Kaiser Bengali; Nikhat Sattar, independent consultant; Arumugam Muthulingam, GVD Tilakasiri from Sri Lanka, Abul Hossain, from Bangladesh, Ramesh Badal from Nepal (all trade union and labour rights activists); Chaudhary Manzoor, Chairman Peoples Labour Federation; Mohammad Ali Shah, Chairperson Pakistan Fisher Folk Forum; Bisharat Ali, University of Sindh; and others.
The Conference concluded following conferring of the Faiz Ahmed Faiz Labour Award to senior trade unionists and civil society activists.
