Promoting Decent Work through Tripartite Consultation
PILER in partnership with Just Solutions Network , UK has undertaken a project “Promoting Decent Work through Tripartite Consultation” in the city of Sialkot in April 2007. In Nov. 2006 Nike Inc. withdrew the soccer ball manufacturing contract signed with a local manufacturer of Sialkot. Consequently, about 7, 600 workers were laid off. The company is yet to clear the dues of the retrenched workers.

PILER is working to:

  • provide legal aid / capacity-building support to the retrenched workers;
  • help workers to relocate in the new supply chain or access alternative opportunities for livelihood;
  • secure employment for retrenched workers with new NIKE contractors, through consultations with local employers CSR (Corporate Social Responsibility);
  • encourage emergence of innovative and women-friendly co-operatives; and
  • facilitate emergence of a tri-partite institutional mechanism for compliance and monitoring of labour standards.

At present, the field research has been completed and the research report is being finalized by the researchers at PILER.

Analyzing the Effectiveness of Intervention for the Release and Rehabilitation of Bonded Labourers

PILER was selected as a partner to a regional 4-year project initiated in May 2004, funded by Anti-Slavery International. The aim was to investigate intervention for the release and rehabilitation of bonded labour in three different countries-India, Pakistan and Nepal, analyze their effectiveness or failure and identify successful measures in the initial phase. GEFONT, Nepal and CEC, India are the other partners. PILER investigated release and rehabilitation in agriculture and brick kiln sectors where the prevalence of bounded labour is high. The project is in its completion phase.
