Ode to Nirmala Deshpande!

Pakistan Institute of Labour Education and Research, PILER, expresses its deepest condolences on the sudden demise of our friend, Padma Vibhushan Nirmala Deshpande. The seventy-nine-year-old veteran Gandhian, who was also a sincere follower of Vinoba Bhave died in her sleep at 5:00 am on the 1st of May, 2008.

PILER had a close connection with Ms. Deshpande . PILER highly values her sacrifices for the marginalized minorities in India and her struggles for making peace in the South Asian region to uplift the condition of the downtrodden.

Mainly known as “Didi” to those who knew her personally, her unexpected death has left a vacuum in our lives. She was known as a sincere politician, a dynamic individual, an active social worker and above all a truly elevated human being.

May her name always be written in golden words in history and the cause for which she stood is materialized by our younger generations.

May her soul rest in peace!

May 7, 2008

Dear friends,

The mission for universal peace and harmony, particularly peace in South Asia, which late Didi Nirmala Deshpande lived and worked for till 1st May 2008, the last day of her 79 years of life in this world, calls upon all of us, especially the people of South Asia, to own it as our own cause and strive collectively for its accomplishment.

An urn containing late Didi Nirmala’s ashes was brought to Karachi from Delhi yesterday by Karamat Ali and B.M.Kutty, who had attended the last rites of Didi on Friday, 2nd May. Two Federal Ministers, Sherry Rehman and Qamaruzzaman Kaira and a former MNA Ch. Manzoor Ahmed also attended the ceremony in Delhi.

As you know, late Didi was an ardent advocate of lasting peace and friendship between India and Pakistan. She loved the people of Pakistan as much as she loved the people of India. Her vision knew no frontiers. It was her wish that after her death, apart from the rivers of India and other South Asian/Asian countries, her ashes should be immersed in the Sindhu (Indus) river as a mark of her love for Pakistan.

We are proposing a meeting representing all sections of society who stand for peace, human rights and social justice and all those who have had the opportunity to be associated with Nirmala Didi’s mission in one way or other, on Friday 9th May 2008 at 4.30 P.M. at Jinnah Medical & Dental College Auditorium, Shaheed-e-Millat Road, Karachi . to consider the following matters:

Arrangements to be made for the immersion of late Didi Nirmalaji’s ashes and drawing the outlines of how to work for furthering her unfinished mission in Pakistan.

• To decide on the point - Kotri, Sukkur, Punjnad, Attock or any other - where the immersion is to take place and the date and time thereof.
• Logistics relating to transportation of the ashes out of Karachi to the point of immersion.
• Draw the outlines of how to work for furthering the mission of late Nirmala Dadi.
• Any other matter as proposed in the meeting.

It would be highly appreciated if you kindly ensure your participation in this important meeting.

Sincerely
Syed Shamsuddin
