PAKISTAN DELEGATION TO PEOPLE'S SAARC

The South Asian People’s Assembly for the year 2008 (also known as the People’s SAARC) is taking place in Colombo, Sri Lanka during 18th to 20th July, 2008 which is just a week ahead of the official SAARC Summit. The Peoples’ SAARC (which started in 1993) is a process parallel to the official South Asian Association of Regional Cooperation (SAARC) where the concerned people from South Asia meet annually in a South Asian country. A fifty-member delegation is participating from Pakistan.

The delegation comprise of activists from people’s movements, civil society organizations, intellectuals, cultural practitioners, parliamentarians, and concerned individuals as well as political activists. Munir A. Malik, Ex-President of Supreme Court Bar Association; Syed Iqbal Haider, Co-Chairman of Human Rights Commission of Pakistan; Members of the Pakistan National Assembly: Nafisa Shah (PPP); Bushra Gohar (ANP) ; Sufian Younus (Muttahida Quami Movement); Chaudhry Manzoor Ahmed (PPP); Senator Dr. Abdul Malik (National Party); Farooq Tariq, Spokesperson for The Labour Party of Pakistan and member of the Regional Steering Committee of Pakistan; Mr. Karamat Ali, Executive Director of Pakistan Institute of Labour Education and Research (PILER) are also part of the delegation.
